Tree Warden

The Parish Council supports the care, protection and enhancement of trees and hedgerows throughout the parish.

Tree Wardens play an important role in helping to conserve the local environment, encourage biodiversity and promote awareness of the value of trees within the community.

The Tree Warden may assist with:

• Monitoring and reporting issues affecting local trees and hedgerows.
• Supporting tree planting and conservation initiatives.
• Promoting good tree management and environmental awareness.
• Liaising with residents, landowners and relevant authorities where appropriate.

BACKGROUND

The Tree Council is a National charity which was formed in 1973 to promote the planting and care of trees in the whole of the UK. It has established a group of volunteers called Parish Tree Wardens who work at the parish level to plant, care for trees and act as a local resource for all tree issues. The Parish Tree Wardens are co-ordinated at county level by the County Council via the Parish Council. Earls Croome has had a Tree Warden for many years, at this time it is Malcolm Tomkins.

Tree planting in the past has mainly taken place on the commons. Notable examples are on Dunstall Common near to the castle on both sides of the road, and beside the drive to Red Deer Farm. There is also a sizeable planting to the east of the drive to Defford Mill on the north side of the road.

More recent planting has taken place around Dunstall and Marsh Commons. The main focus has been the planting of varied species to maintain a robust tree stock as many ash trees are likely to die due to Ash Die-back. In some cases work has been done to encourage self-seeded trees rather than just planting new ones, and re-generating existing trees by coppicing or pruning.
